SP balasubrahmanyam

SP balasubrahmanyam is an award-winning Indian playback singer who has a massive fan following. He is also known for his husband of the famous actress, Parvathy Omanakutty. The marriage took place in 2015 and Balu’s voice was used for their children’s songs as well. You can also see him in a number of other films too, including ‘Irumbukkottai Murattu Kaalchiki’ and ‘Pulival Kalyanam’. His album “Aramanan” is another big hit.

Bala started his journey as a singer in the year 1977. He was a child artiste who had sung for many films, including ‘Kai Kodukkuray’, ‘Kaathirundhavan Kaathirundhaal’ and ‘Suryagandhi’. Later on, he became quite famous for singing the title tracks for many movies such as ‘Naan Avanillai’, ‘Suryavamsam’ and others.

Life of Balasubrahmanyam

His birth

SP balasubrahmanyam was born on 4th June 1946. He hails from the state of Telangana. Balasubrahmanyam has two elder brothers, Ilaiyaraaja and Manoj, and a younger brother named Prabhakar. He got training in Carnatic music from the age of five, under the guidance of his father, SP Sambayya.

His education

SP balasubrahmanyam education started at the age of 5. He joined a school in Warangal, where he studied up to 5th standard.

He then joined a primary school in Palakol, where he studied till 4th standard.

Later on, Bala went to Warangal and attended the Maharajah’s College and graduated in commerce. He then completed B.Com from Nizam College.

His personal life

In 1965, Bala married a fellow Carnatic music artiste named Savithri. They have a son and daughter. Their son, S. P. B. Charan,, is also an artiste, who gave his voice for the Tamil version of ‘Bruce Lee’.

The couple was blessed with one daughter also, Pallavi, who is a television actress and married to Siddharth and Anujan. There are also several grandchildren among them too.

Career of Balasubrahmanyam

SP balasubrahmanyam started his career in the year 1977, when he joined as a singer under the Chowdiah label. He sang many popular songs, such as ‘Nee Thaniyavum Palangal Oram’, ‘Nenjiganti’, ‘Nenjiganti’ and also, ‘Meendum Kuruvi’. He also sang for Priyadarshan’s movie ‘Irumbukkottai Murattu Kaalchiki’, where he sang the song titled “Kannil Kilatti”.

1960s–1970s

Bala became a popular singer in Tamil cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. He became the playback singer for M. G. Ramachandran’s most memorable songs, such as those from the movies ‘Kandan Karunai’, ‘Agraharathil Kazhuthai’ and others.

He also sang for other music directors like V. Kumar and Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, as well as many other composers including M. S. Viswanathan, Ramesh Naidu, Shankar – Ganesh and many others.

He also sang many duets with other female singers, such as P. Susheela and S. Janaki, for many popular compositions of Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan.

1980s

After the success of the movies like ‘Pattinappol Radhakrishnan’ (1980), ‘Teykada Vanthu’ and others, Bala’s popularity remained at top level during this decade. He also sang many songs for other composers like Ilaiyaraaja, while giving his voice to popular numbers of Shankar – Ganesh and others too.

SP balasubrahmanyam released his first solo album titled ‘Ramanan’ in 1980, while composing one self-composed song called “Thane Chidambaram Varuvaayindhey”, which was initially released as a duet with S. Janaki. He also composed music for several songs in this album.

Before this album and career started, he had been in the Indian Police Services, from which he retired in 1979.

1980s–1990s

Bala then started to sing for a lot of movies and became a successful singer. He sang for movies like ‘Sindhooraaga’ (1981), ‘Vei Veedu’ (1986), ‘Punar Bharathiyam’ (1987), ‘Don’t Ever Touch Shyamala’ (1988), ‘Kalanthi Pallavi’ (1989) and many others too. He held many musical concerts during this period, including those in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Canada and other countries as well.

In the year 1989, Bala sang for the movie ‘Vallavanukku Pullaman’, where he sang the tracks ‘Kavumbhagini’ and ‘Lakshmi Kanne Raja’.

1990s–2000s

In the 1990s, Bala’s popularity increased a lot more and he released many popular albums such as ‘Mullum Malarum’ (1995), ‘Samarpanam’ (1996), ‘Taana’ (1997), ‘Annai Varthaen’ (1999) and many others.

In the year 1996, he sang for the movie ‘Chanakyan’, where he sang the tracks ‘Yen Kuzhandaigal’, ‘Aayiram nilavae’ and many others.

His debut film as a music director was ‘Azhagiya Theegala Padanam’ (1997), where he also sang two of his own self-composed songs. Later on, in 1997, Bala composed music for the movie ‘Arunachalam’, where he also sang and composed a number of songs for this movie.

He also sang many popular tracks, such as the ones for the movies ‘Pattinappol Radhakrishnan (1980), ‘Irumbum Poomi’ (1990), ‘Pudichuvadhuvil’ (1991) and others.

SP balasubrahmanyam has released many albums during this period, including some albums in Tamil (‘Mullum Malarum’, ‘Samarpanam’), English (‘Ramanan’, ‘Taana’) and also in Malayalam (‘Azhagiya Theegala Padanam’). He also sang many tracks in the albums, including ‘Kedara Mayakkuyil’ and ‘Azhagiya Theegala Padanam’.

In 2000, his son S. P. B. Charan made his debut as a singer with this album ‘Muthuswamy’, where he had sung a few tracks on it, while Balasubrahmanyam had composed music for it as well.

2000–2020

In early 2000 Bala and Ilaiyaraaja rejoined together, to compose music for the Tamil movie ‘Chandramukhi’. This movie was a huge blockbuster and its songs were also successful.

In 2001, he sang two tracks for the movie ‘Vivahitha Deivam’, which were composed by his son SPB Charan. He sang two more songs for this movie in the year 2002, which were composed by his brother Ilaiyaraaja.

After 2002, Bala continued to release many more albums in the various languages and also released a few more solo albums like ‘Vaanavil’, ‘Ananda Thandavam’ and others before 2010.

In 2010, Bala released a compilation album titled ‘Gopura Gopura’, which featured many songs from his movie and other albums.

In 2012, he released his own contribution titled ‘Pallavi Puviye’, which was composed by him and sung by the siblings Siddharth and Anujan. He also gave his voice for several more music directors like Devi Sri Prasad, M. M. Keeravani, A. R. Rahman, D Imman, Dheerendra Gopalakrishna etc., for different occasions especially in Tamil cinema, as an actor and a singer through out the last few decades after 1980s till now.

Awards and honor

SP balasubrahmanyam is one of the most famous playback singers in Indian film industry and has won many awards. He is also famous for appearing in the reality show, Airtel Super Singer and he was one of the judges, along with Shankar Mahadevan and Anu Malik. He judged three seasons, which were 1st season in 2006, 2nd season (held for Tamil Nadu state) in 2007 and 3rd season in 2008.
