Digi locker is an application provided by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. If you have a massive amount of information in your head that you would now like to share with the world, (maybe it’s a writing or painting project, or various ideas) then digi locker is the app for you.
It not only lets you organize your files and link them together in one searchable place, but also lets other people collaborate on your project. It’s perfect for big questions like ‘what are our priorities?’ and ‘where do we go from here?’ while giving all members of the team an opportunity to contribute to the design process.
What is the use of DigiLocker?
DigiLocker is a platform that gives every Indian a virtual locker to keep his important documents, certificates and files. It has been created by National e-Governance Division (NeGD) in association with NIC. DigiLocker works across 13 states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan.
The platform lets you upload your documents on the cloud and access them from anywhere on your computer or smartphone. DigiLocker is also compatible with the Aadhaar card number of the user which makes it easier for users to make updates to their Aadhaar card online.
How do you access my locker?
The DigiLocker is available at all NIC empanelled service centers across the country. You can simply walk in and get your locker set up free of cost.
How do I upload my documents into this app?
If you have an existing account which is already linked with Aadhaar, you can just visit the homepage, login and click on the Manage button on the top left corner to upload your documents.
How do I access my documents from anywhere on my phone or computer?
With DigiLocker, you can create different sets of links to your documents so that multiple users can view them. You will see them as a virtual document in a folder called DigiLocker on the left side of your browser. Simply click on the document and you can view it.
How do I share my documents with someone?
You can share your link with anyone, who can then access your documents. Also, you can create a set of links and let other users view them by sharing them.
If I have created a document in an MS Word file, how do I upload that into this app?
Simply convert it to PDF using Adobe Acrobat reader or any other PDF conversion software on your computer. Then simply upload it into your DigiLocker account. All the necessary formatting will be retained in the uploaded document.
This app is valid?
Yes, DigiLocker is valid. You can use DigiLocker for 12 months after which it gets linked with your Aadhaar card. There is no need to create a new account or sign up every time you want to use the service.
What files are being stored in this app?
Images, PDFs, video and audio files can be uploaded by you and other users who have set up the service on their computers.
Is this app free of cost?
Yes. It is a free service. Users can create and upload documents without any charge. They can also share their links with anyone else who has access to internet and can view the linked documents online. There is no storage overhead or any special attachment charges either.
Applications of this app
DigiLocker lets you carry your important documents with you while away from home, making it more accessible in case of an emergency. Also, DigiLocker lets you access your files even if your computer crashes or you lose it which is not possible when information is stored in physical form only. Moreover, the platform enables to make duplicate copies of important papers at multiple locations for extra safety.
This app is safe or not?
DigiLocker is safe because you can only upload documents which are in PDF format or image form. The file cannot be edited. Once uploaded, you get an acknowledgement message that your file has been uploaded successfully.
How can I trust that my documents are safe in this app?
DigiLocker safeguards the documents by encrypting them with Digital Signature Certificate. This not only protects data from getting lost or tampered with, but also allows users to verify authenticity of the documents stored in DigiLocker. This is done by using digital certificates issued to a user by a trusted authority like Symantec or Thumbprint which verifies the identity and authenticity of individuals and companies across internet transactions.
