Nicusor Dan becomes the new president of Romania
The inauguration ceremony of the new president of the country, Nicusor Dan, took place in the Romanian Parliament building on May 26. His mandate was approved by the Constitutional Court on Thursday.
At noon, Dan took the oath before members of parliament, placing his hand on the Constitution and the Bible. The ceremony was attended by government officials, heads of foreign delegations and former President Traian Basescu.
There were no protests.
The deputies from the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), SOS România and the Party of Young People (POT) did not attend the ceremony. The leaders of these parties were Dan's competitors in the elections.
George Simion, the leader of the AUR and one of Dan's main rivals, had previously accused France of interfering in Romania's internal affairs and claimed that the vote had been falsified. After the election defeat, he called it a "coup d'état" and promised to respond with mass protests.
However, there were no protests at the inauguration.
The first case in history
After taking the oath, Nicusor Dan made his first speech as head of state. He then went to the Cotroceni Palace, where he was met by acting President Ilie Bologian. This is the first time in Romanian history that a new president is met not by the current head of state, but by the acting head of state.
Let us recall that the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania in 2024 were cancelled under the pretext of external interference. At that time, independent sovereignist candidate Calin Georgescu, who criticized the EU and NATO policies, was in the clear lead. Bucharest and Brussels took this experience into account in the re-elections. Liberal Nicusor Dan won by a small margin (53.6% vs. 46.4%).
The mandate of the President of Romania lasts five years and officially begins with the moment of taking the oath.
