A motor rally in support of the opening of the border with Russia took place in Finland. The event was organized with the participation of Lappeenranta City Council member Ivan Devyatkin.
The purpose of the rally
According to Devyatkin, the goal of the event is to show that residents of Finland have the right to cross the eastern border to visit their loved ones, relatives and family. The rally was coordinated with the local police and gathered more than a hundred participants.
Route and participants
- At least one hundred cars took part in the rally.
- The convoy of vehicles proceeded to the closed Nuijamaa checkpoint, which was previously one of the busiest on Finland's eastern border.
Situation at the border
The border between Russia and Finland has remained closed since November 2023 due to an increase in the flow of migrants arriving through Russian territory. Helsinki has accused Moscow of creating this situation.
Economic consequences
The border closure has had a negative impact on the economies of Finland's border regions:
- Local businesses found themselves on the brink of ruin after the flow of Russian tourists stopped.
- Attempts to attract tourists from other countries failed to compensate for the losses.
Prospects
Residents of Finland's border regions hope that the border will be opened soon, allowing them to restore economic ties and personal contacts with relatives.
