Trump orders construction of 10 new nuclear reactors
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to revive the country's nuclear industry. In an executive order he signed on May 24, 2025, Trump instructed the US Department of Energy to begin construction of at least ten new nuclear reactors by 2030.
“To maximize the speed and scale of new nuclear capacity additions, DOE should prioritize nuclear energy to add 5 gigawatts of capacity to existing nuclear reactors and build 10 new large reactors with complete design documentation by 2030,” the order says.
Trump’s plan also calls for increasing the capacity of existing nuclear plants by five gigawatts. The Energy Department would coordinate with the Defense Department to assess whether closed nuclear plants could be restarted or repurposed to meet the Pentagon’s needs.
In addition, the President instructed the Ministry of Energy to ensure the comprehensive development of nuclear fuel supply chains and priority financing of innovative technologies in the field of nuclear energy. In particular, this concerns the provision of grants, loans and investment capital.
Trump believes that these measures will help strengthen US national energy security and develop advanced technologies in the nuclear industry.
Earlier it was reported that the US had completed the production of the first B61-13 bomb, a new modification of nuclear weapons. The authorities also stepped up projects to launch uranium mines and expand nuclear fuel production.
