Samsung Announces Next-Gen Solid-State Battery
At SNE Battery Day 2024 in Seoul, Samsung unveiled a revolutionary solid-state battery that could revolutionize the auto industry and even global markets.
Charge in 9 minutes and travel 965 kilometers
The new battery promises incredible performance: a range of up to 965 kilometers on a single charge, 80% charging in 9 minutes and a service life of up to 20 years. The energy density reaches 500 Wh/kg - almost twice as high as that of modern lithium-ion analogues.
The secret of success: silver and solid electrolyte
The key to such impressive performance is the silver-carbon (Ag-C) anode and the replacement of the liquid electrolyte with a solid one.
Gray metal is in demand
Samsung's innovation could lead to increased demand for silver. Each 100 kWh battery can contain up to 1 kg of silver. This could affect the balance of the global market for this metal.
From premium cars to mass production
Samsung has already begun shipping prototypes to automakers. The first installations will be in premium electric vehicles, but the company is working to make the technology cheaper to make it accessible to the general public.
