WhatsApp and Telegram are having problems with calls, with users complaining of poor or no connection. This concerns calls via Wi-Fi, while mobile internet is generally stable, but in many regions it is also disconnected.
Description of the problem
The connection is either not established or the connection is very poor and slow, making it impossible to talk. Dozens of complaints about this problem have appeared on social networks. The Business FM editorial team conducted an experiment with both messengers, and the call functions practically do not work.
Causes of the problem and possible solutions
Earlier, the Big Four operators — MTS, Megafon, Beeline and T2 — proposed banning calls in messengers. According to market participants, this decision will return traffic to regular voice communications and increase revenues, help avoid possible blocking of messengers and reduce the level of telephone fraud.
Expert opinions
- Leonid Konik, CEO of the ComNews group of companies, believes that the problem of anonymous voice calls from abroad is, first and foremost, a problem of fraudsters.
- Chairman of the Board of the Digital Economy Development Fund German Klimenko believes that the state should either block instant messengers or cut off voice traffic.
- First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Anton Tkachev believes that the practice of banning voice and video calls via WhatsApp and Telegram messengers will end with citizens using VPNs en masse.
Prospects for the development of the situation
A number of deputies in the State Duma believe that it is better to develop Russian analogues of messengers, others remind that sometimes messengers are the only way to get through, for example, far from the city, or to contact relatives abroad.
Overall, the situation requires attention from both telecom operators and the state, which must find a balance between combating fraudsters and ensuring freedom of communication for citizens.
