ICO: How the Cover Ruined Game Sales in the US
Iko, a masterpiece by Fumito Ueda, was released in the United States in 2001, before Japan and Europe. However, instead of the atmospheric De Chirico-inspired cover, American players were treated to 3D art of Iko holding a stick with a giant Yorda face in the background.
This cover did not convey the essence of the game at all and could mislead new players into thinking that they were playing a completely different game than the one the creator had in mind.
