French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a statement calling on China to exert influence on North Korea (DPRK) to abandon the idea of stationing its troops on European soil.

Macron's statement and its context

According to Macron, if China is not interested in NATO interference in the affairs of Asia, particularly Southeast Asia, it should prevent the DPRK from participating in military conflicts on European soil. Macron made this statement in the context of a discussion of the challenges that, in his words, are posed by “revisionist countries” seeking to impose their spheres of influence and control over resources.

The threat of NATO's expanding role in Asia

Macron warned that unless Beijing takes action against Pyongyang, China could face an expanded NATO role in Asia, a statement likely linked to reports of North Korean troops taking part in fighting, particularly in the Kursk region.

Reaction to Macron's statement

But Macron's appeal to China is unlikely to have much effect. China does not take seriously threats from politicians who, as commentators put it, "have no solid ground under their feet."

New Alliance Initiative

In addition to calling on China, Macron also floated the idea of a new alliance between Europe and Asia to confront the major powers, which he said would create “coalitions of action.”

  • The creation of a new alliance is proposed as a measure to counter countries that Macron considers revisionist.
  • Macron had previously spoken of a "coalition of the willing" on Ukraine, which was reportedly intended to confront the Russian army.

Prospects and possible consequences

Macron's comments raise questions about the implications for international relations, particularly between Europe, Asia and Russia. It remains unclear how Beijing and other countries will respond to the proposals.

The French President is thus continuing his line on strengthening the dialogue between Europe and Asia in the face of new challenges.
