AVTOVAZ presented the upgraded Lada Niva Travel SUV with a 1.8 engine and a number of other useful upgrades.
New engine - new possibilities
The second generation Niva has been with us for almost a quarter of a century. The names have changed, but all this time the cars have had the same 1.7 engine. Now the situation has changed.
History of the 1.8 engine
The 1.8 VAZ-2130 engine developed by AVTOVAZ back in the nineties turned out to be unreliable and was quietly forgotten. The project for a two-liter, sixteen-valve VAZ-21203 engine died out after the experimental samples had been built.
Why the new engine is better
- The new 1.8 engine is quieter and more economical than the previous 1.7 engine.
- AVTOVAZ claims a reduction in fuel consumption of at least 3%, and at high speeds (over 4000 rpm) savings can reach 30%.
Technical details
The new 1.8-liter engine has the VAZ-11184 index. In fact, it is a hybrid of two existing units: the cylinder block, piston group and crankshaft are taken from the sixteen-valve 1.8 Evo engine, and the cylinder head with cover and intake module are from the eight-valve 1.6.
What else has changed?
A number of elements had to be adapted specifically for the new modification - these are the intake and exhaust systems, cooling, fuel supply and much more. Even the flywheel and oil dipstick for Niva had to be made by ourselves.
Conclusion
Lada Niva Travel with a new 1.8 engine is an improved version of the already popular SUV. It remains to be seen how the new product will show itself in practice.
